Scholarships
Study Abroad Grants
Grants are available to all USA students majoring in Foreign Languages with a concentration in French, German, Russian, or Spanish in good standing. Grants are awarded up to a maximum of $2000, subject to the availability of funding and the number of eligible applicants. Apply on Jag$pot under the semester for which you plan to study abroad.
Endowed Scholarships
The Department awards over $20,000 in additional scholarships each year. Apply for these scholarships on Jag$pot.
As this scholarship is intended to assist students with a demonstrated financial need, interested students must demonstrate financial need in their application. Confirmation thereof by the Dyess Scholarship Committee will occur before the award is made.
Applicants must also meet the following requirements:
- be in their sophomore or junior year
- have completed a minimum of one and a half years of university-level language study
- be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Ideal candidates will also:
- have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in foreign language courses taken at USA
- have an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0
- be recommended by an instructor or professor in the Department of Foreign Languages.
Preference will be given to Foreign Language majors and minors, as well as students majoring or minoring in academic programs with substantial foreign language components, such as International Studies, teacher certification programs, etc.
The award is a one-time grant to cover tuition and ³ÉÈË¿ì²¥al expenses at the University of South ³ÉÈË¿ì²¥, its associated study abroad programs, or at other nationally recognized programs abroad.
Students can apply for the Dyess Scholarship in late Spring of the academic year. Awards are decided at the end of the semester.
General preference will be given to an upper-level language student majoring in a Foreign Language (or International Studies) with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in a second foreign language. If all candidates nominated under this category are of equal merit, preference will be given to the language major.
Second preference will be given to an upper-level language major with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in the field.
Third preference will be given to an intermediate student majoring in a language with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in at least one other foreign language.
Fourth preference will be given to an intermediate student majoring in a language with an overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated interest in the field.
First preference to an upper-level German major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the German language, culture, and literature.
Second preference to an intermediate German major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the German language, culture, and literature.
Third preference to a German minor, overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0
Preference is given to Russian majors who have displayed outstanding knowledge of the language and culture and have a minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.0 and a G.P.A. of 3.25 in the language.
This award is given to the Spanish major with the highest G.P.A. in Spanish in courses taken at USA, preferably a Senior or a Junior. If no Junior or Senior Spanish major qualifies, then the scholarship is awarded to the Spanish minor with the highest G.P.A. in Spanish in courses taken at USA.
In the event of a tie the following considerations are weighed when making the decision:
dedication to Spanish and participation in Spanish-related activities on campus.
plans for the future: i.e., how the student plans to use his or her knowledge of Spanish.
Named in honor of former department Chairman Bernard J. Quinn's mother the Jacqueline Quinn Gray Scholarship gives first preference to an upper-level French major; overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0; demonstrated interest in the French language, culture, and literature.
Second preference to a French minor, overall G.P.A. of at least 3.0.
Other Foreign Language Scholarships
Relevant College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships
Donated by the mother of Earl P. Andrews, this scholarship is dedicated to aiding disadvantaged students majoring in Arts and Sciences. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible for this scholarship, awarded for the first time in fall 2001. It will provide assistance in the amount of $1,000 per year to the individual(s) chosen. Students must reapply each spring. An original essay (1,000 word limit) addressing the following points: 1) The obstacles you are currently facing in the pursuit of your ³ÉÈË¿ì²¥, 2) Description of accomplishments to date, 3) Your goals regarding higher ³ÉÈË¿ì²¥, career planning and aspirations.
